What are Chinese food names are so funny?
Yes, they do sound very funny, even to the Chinese. But it is a history of survival in an unfamiliar land that started it all. When the first wave of immigrants came to the U.S. in the early 1800s, they were mostly laborers working on the railroads or gold mines in California.Sadly most were abandoned and left to survive on their own once the work was completed or no longer deemed useful. In order to survive in a foreign country, these laborers did what they could to keep afloat. As time went on, most learned to save up enough money to open and start their own business. Many chose the restaurant field but due of their limited English, it was understandably difficult for them to be creative when naming the dishes. In the end, most did their best by translating the Chinese pronunciation directly into English. Decades later these “funny” names are not only common to every household but also well built into American families and culture.Changing it now would only be even more confusing!!
